Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience (P.R.I.M.E.)
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a new funding programme (co-financed by the German federal ministry of education and research and the European Commission under the Marie Curie Co-fund Action) for outstanding postdoctoral researchers from all disciplines and nationalities: Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience (P.R.I.M.E.). Funding is provided for 18 months, in which 12 months have to be spent abroad and 6 months (re-integration phase) at a German university. The re-integration phase is mandatory. The novelty is that the programme is open to all nationalities and that the DAAD is funding a position at a German host institution, not a scholarship. The remuneration will be at a rate appropriate for postdoctoral researchers at the respective university and includes social security coverage. Should the institution provide additional benefits during the stay abroad, these are covered up to a country specific maximum value. After a five year pilot phase, the programme will be evaluated in order to decide on its future development.

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) offers close to 6000 internships throughout the over 80 member countries. The German branch of IAESTE operates under the umbrella of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This year the DAAD is distributing almost 1000 internship places for German students to the respective IAESTE offices at German higher education institutions. Another 1000 internship places are offered for foreign students in Germany.

Germany is investing more in education
The annual report of the Federal Statistical Office on educational spending shows a total amount of around EUR 116.6 billion in 2013, encompassing national, regional and local level. This represents a growth of nearly EUR 30 billion in comparison to 2005. Every fifth Euro of the overall public budget was spent on education.
For the higher education sector the federal government spent 20% more (EUR 4.9 billion) than in the preceding year on improving the quality of teaching and research as well as the conditions for studying in Germany.
