Since 2001, our member The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) publish annually a report about the latest Facts and Figures on the International Nature of Study and Research in Germany and abroad.

As of this month, the English version of the Wissenschaft Weltoffen Kompakt 2021, a handy data and facts brochure format of the main annual report, providing figures and statistics on mobility of both German students and researchers abroad and foreign students and researchers studying in Germany, has become available.

The report is based on the following four categories:

  • international students in Germany
  • German students abroad
  • international student mobility
  • researcher mobility in Germany

Concerning international students in Germany, data showed that the number of international students at German universities continued to rise in the winter semester 2019/20, with the overwhelming majority (92%) of international students aiming for a degree in Germany. Asia and Pacific representeds the key region of origin for these international students.

For German students going to study abroad, in 2018, around 135,000 Germans studied abroad, and the majority of these students (approx. 90%) were also pursuing a degree abroad and the key host countries were Austria, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
