The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) reaffirms its commitment to strengthening academic and scientific cooperation with the United States following Donald Trump’s re-election as US President. Despite potential challenges in transatlantic relations, DAAD President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee emphasised the enduring significance of partnerships with US universities, which remain robust and independent collaborators.
The DAAD has a long-standing connection with the US, dating back to its founding in 1925 with initial funding from the Institute of International Education. This relationship remains pivotal, with DAAD planning to commemorate its centenary in 2025.
Academic exchange between the two nations is thriving, with over 2,300 collaborations between universities. In 2023, DAAD supported thousands of students and academics in exchanges between Germany and the US. As DAAD looks to the future, it is committed to deepening these ties, fostering innovation, and enhancing mutual understanding in higher education.
The DAAD regional office in Brussels plays an important part in these efforts through the continuous cooperation and organization of events with the American partners such as IIE (see here: Transatlantic High-Level Roundtable “Towards a common framework for EU-US higher education” - DAAD Brüssel and Transatlantic Roundtable: The Current State of EU-US People to People Exchanges in Higher Education - DAAD Brüssel).
