As from 1st January 2015 the Rectors' Conference of Swiss Universities (CRUS), founded in 1904, will be dissolved and its Secretariat will merge in the General Secretariat of swissuniversities, the new joint national Conference of Rectors of all three conferences that currently exist in Switzerland: CRUS, the Rectors' Conference of Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (KFH) and the Swiss Conference of Rectors of Universities of Teacher Education (COHEP). The General Secretariat of swissuniversities will be in Bern.

swissuniversities was founded in November 2012 with the main task to consolidate and further develop collaboration between the academic universities, universities of applied sciences and universities of teacher education, and to gradually prepare the merger of the respective Conferences, according to the provisions of the Hochschulförderungs- und Koordinationsgesetz (HFKG) - the Swiss Higher Education Bill on the promotion of universities and coordination in Switzerland’s higher education sector due to come into force in 2015. 

ACA membership status will pass from CRUS to swissuniversities. Regarding the activities, the tasks that are common to all Conferences will be taken over by swissuniversities, while the university-specific tasks will be covered by the universities’ chamber. Programmes such as Sciex-NMSch (scientific exchange between Switzerland and the ten new Member States of the European Union), programs for equal opportunities, for access to scientific information or for measuring research performance will continue without changes until their conclusion. Although the merger comes at a time where it is ongoing the planning of the next message on the promotion of education, research and innovation in the years 2017-2020 (ERI Dispatch 2017-2020), the reorganization does not involve any interruption of the important activities. In fact, the Swiss University Conference (SUK) was instructed by CRUS to submit the strategic planning by the end of 2014. For post 2017-2020 projects instead, CRUS and SUK commissioned KFH and COHEP to develop in mutual consultation the requests for funding.
