European Council adopted a resolution on further developing the European Education Area. The resolution deals with the role of future-oriented education and training systems in the context of the ongoing discussions on the future of Europe as well as in the implementation of the New Strategic Agenda 2019-2024 adopted by the European Council in June 2019.
While most of the conclusions focus on lifelong learning and training, mobility in higher education is outlined as a way to offer “wide access to learning mobility as well as reinforced strategic partnerships and policy support for more inclusive, lifelong learning-based, gender responsive and innovation driven education, training and youth policies.”
The resolution also specifically “recognises European Universities as an ambitious initiative that can allow more intensive, innovative and structured cooperation between all types of higher education institutions from all regions in Europe, at all levels and across all areas of activity (…)” The Council also invites member states “to raise awareness about the European Universities and encourage different types of higher education institutions to participate, by ensuring the high quality as well as geographical and social inclusiveness of the initiative (…)”
