Changes in Swedish Government authorities dealing with education

Three government authorities in Sweden dealing with education – the International Programme Office (IPK), an ACA member, the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education and The Swedish Agency for Higher Education Services – will become two.

The two new authorities, The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) and The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR), will be operational from 1 January 2013.

The areas of responsibility for The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) will be:

  • Quality evaluation of higher education as well as assessment of degree-awarding powers;
  • Supervision of universities and university colleges in Sweden;
  • Follow up and analysis.
The present Director General for Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, Lars Haikola, will be appointed as the Director General for The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) which will have approximately 85 employees. The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) will be responsible for:
  • Support and information regarding international cooperation and academic exchange across the entire education spectrum;
  • Admission regulations and admission to higher education institutions;
  • The Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test and information regarding studies at the higher education level;
  • Evaluation of foreign academic qualifications (from the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, The Swedish Agency for Higher Education Services and the Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education);
  • Nordic and European exchange service for state officials, and training in preparation for European Union’s selection examinations.

The present Director General of The International Programme Office, Ulf Melin, will be appointed as the Director General for The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) which will have approximately 210 employees.

We congratulate Ulf Melin on his appointment and wish him success and luck in his new position.
