Celebrating transatlantic mobility and cooperation in higher education

The EAIE Conference and Exhibition in Gothenburg, 9 – 12 September, proved to be an eventful and exciting week for the Institute of International Education (IIE), as Dr. Allan E. Goodman, president emeritus of the IIE, received the President’s Award at the association’s annual conference. The award celebrates Dr. Goodman’s commitment to international cooperation and mobility, peace-building, and rescuing scholars at risk.

The conference also commemorated the launch of a joint report on transatlantic mobility by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the IIE. The detailed report, Transatlantic Mobility in Higher Education and Research: A Cornerstone of Transatlantic Relations, highlights the longstanding cooperation between Europe and the U.S. through decades of academic exchanges in higher education, which have facilitated mutual understanding and advanced knowledge, innovation, and workforce development. The report showcases the evolution of transatlantic mobility over the last two decades in the contexts of short and long-term (credit) exchanges, internships, partnerships, and more.

The Transatlantic Report also details the history and significance of transnational cooperation between the U.S. and Europe, including current schemes such as Erasmus+, Horizon Europe, and the Fulbright-Schuman programme. It also features vibrant case-studies from 14 European countries, contributed by ACA member organisations. The data featured in the newly published report lends an uplifting perspective to transatlantic cooperation in an otherwise turbulent geo-political landscape, underscoring the values and benefits of investing in international education.
