Canada tries to increase its attractiveness as a study destination for international students by allowing them to apply for permanent residency while studying in Canada. The changes in the residency conditions are meant to positively influence the choice of international students. Under the previous regime, people on study visas in Canada, could apply for residency only outside of the Canadian territory. Under the new conditions, the students can study and remain in Canada while their residency application is being processed.

It remains to be seen whether and if so, to what extent, the new measures will contribute to increasing the number of international students in Canada.
