The Association of Universities and Colleges in Canada (AUCC) has now calculated that half of the 40.000 teachers and researchers at their 92 institutions for higher learning will have retired by 2016. With the additional increase in research and student enrolment, the Canadian government will have to hire a host of university employees in the coming years. For a European, now, this rings a bell, if not several. With the discussions about academic salaries, student fees, the increased competition for skilled workers and import of students, we will be living in interesting times, as the Chinese would say.
The AUCC study has met with some discussion in the Canadian press, e.g. about the skewed distribution of prospective students in the various Canadian provinces. It is after all a big country.
