In 2008, the Swiss Rectors’ Conference (CRUS) and the Union of Students in Switzerland (VSS) carried out a large scale survey on the study conditions at Swiss universities after Bologna. The results are now available. The purpose of the study was to understand how students experience the Bologna system, and what its strengths and weaknesses are from their perspective. The study is the first of its kind in Switzerland - and in Europe.
Most issues addressed are linked directly to the Bologna reforms, while some questions revolve around general aspects of student life. The report presents findings under the following headings: general assessment and organisation of studies; modes of financing and grants; horizontal mobility; ECTS; workload; etc. The majority of students express satisfaction with the general conditions, while some of the weak points highlighted concern learning outcomes and equal access opportunities. The report does not provide a comparison between the old and the new system, nor an objective description of the Bologna reforms in Switzerland. Instead, it offers an ample account of the current situation of students in the country.
