Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and Facebook: how today’s higher education faculty use social media

Moran, M, Seaman, J., & Tinti-Kane, H. Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and Facebook: how today’s higher education faculty use social media. Pearson Learning Solutions and Babson Survey Research Group, Boston, 2012. Pages: 48.

This report examines faculty’s use of social media for personal, professional and teaching purposes. Overall, a significant number of faculty use social media more extensively for personal use than for professional or teaching purposes. Another consistent trend found in this report is the more intensive use of social media by younger faculty than by older faculty, whether for personal, professional or teaching purposes. Faculty also use different social media for diverse needs and tasks: LinkedIn is primarily used for professional purposes, while Blogs and Wikis are more prevalent for teaching and Facebook for personal purposes. Privacy is indicated as one of the most important barriers to the widespread adoption of social media for teaching.
