Austria has unveiled a new programme aimed at students who have been denied the right to education, making it one of the most significant support schemes of its kind in Europe. The Students at Risk-Fonds provides financial and institutional support to students who face persecution in their home countries due to their identity or political and civic engagement. Through this initiative, Austria reaffirms its commitment to academic freedom and the right to education.
The programme enables affected students to continue their bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD studies in Austria, offering a monthly support of EUR 1200 for the entire duration of their studies, plus two additional semesters. Applicants must already hold admission to an Austrian higher education institution (HEI). Following nomination by the respective HEI, an independent selection committee – composed of experts and representatives of the Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research (BMFWF), the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH) and the OeAD – Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation – decides on the awards.
Looking ahead, the Students at Risk-Fonds is expected to become a cornerstone of Austria’s internationalisation efforts, emphasising solidarity, openness, and academic freedom. It aims to provide a secure academic environment where students at risk can continue their education, rebuild their academic careers, and actively contribute to the higher education community in Austria.
