Austria-India Cooperation Forum strengthens academic ties

Austria is among the top EU nations when it comes to Research and Development and success rates in European programmes such as Horizon Europe and Erasmus+. With the aim to initiate new collaborations, deepen existing partnerships, and enhance academic exchange between India and Austria, the OeAD hosted a bilateral cooperation forum in New Delhi on 24 March 2025, bringing together over 70 representatives from Indian and Austrian higher education institutions. The event was organised in cooperation with Study in India (EdCIL) and facilitated by the Austrian Cultural Forum New Delhi.

The forum took place against the backdrop of deepening political and academic ties between Europe and India. 2024 marked both the 20th anniversary of the EU–India strategic partnership and the 75th year of diplomatic relations between Austria and India. In this regard, both countries highlighted the importance of forward-looking academic cooperation. This broader political context reinforces the relevance of initiatives like the OeAD forum, which addressed current developments in both systems, highlighting the role of institutional cooperation in advancing research, innovation, and mobility. Showcased best-practice projects illustrated the mutual benefits of long-term engagement and knowledge sharing between institutions. A moderated matchmaking session and networking reception facilitated further in-depth discussions.

Looking ahead, the forum has laid the foundation for new joint projects and reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to a globally connected higher education landscape. The OeAD highlights such bilateral platforms as crucial instruments to strengthen Austria’s presence in priority regions and to support universities in forming impactful, sustainable partnerships. The strong engagement and shared vision demonstrated in New Delhi signal a promising future for Austrian–Indian academic relations, anchored in mutual interest, strategic alignment and a shared commitment to excellence.
