Australia: A fast-track student visa system for all

The Australian government has just released a The SSVF brings two main changes: First, a reduction in the number of student visa subclasses, from eight to two. Second, the introduction of a single immigration risk framework for all international students, regardless of whether they are applying for university degrees, VET diplomas, English-language studies, or any other programme. Not only will the new framework be easier to navigate for students and their parents; it will also level the playing field for all education providers. Since 2012, only universities and a small group of VET and other providers have been able to opt for SVP, a simpler, faster (but also costly) route to granting student visas. All others (mostly VET and English-training institutions) have had to go through the standard AL framework, causing them to progress more slowly in their international student enrolment. 
The new, inclusive SSVF system will enable the sustainable growth of Australia’s education sector while reducing the problem of “non-genuine” students currently abusing the fast-track SVP system. Or, at least, that is the intention. Soon-to-begin consultations will put a magnifying glass to the SSVF, and determine whether this new system –which appears to be superior in every way –is indeed the real deal, or too good to be true.
