Attracting international students: Equitable services and support, campus cohesion and community engagement

Equality Challenge Unit (ECU). Attracting international students: Equitable services and support, campus cohesion and community engagement. Author, London, 2012. Pages: 89.

Published in May, this research report investigates how advancing equality and diversity can support the internationalisation agenda across three major areas pertinent to international students: equity of support and professional services; campus cohesion; and community engagement. The study was undertaken at six Scottish universities using case studies and feedback from staff and student interviews. International students encompassed both EU and non-EU nationals.

The research results suggest ways to develop an institutional culture to attract and support international students and to consolidate relationships with the local community. The report highlights best practice already employed at the participating institutions and provides recommendations for different service areas. One of the key findings suggests that a more proactive approach to breaking down interaction barriers between UK and international students is needed.
