ACA’s founding Director Alan Smith awarded the Constance Meldrum Award for Vision Leadership

At the beginning of September, the European Association for Internal Association (EAIE) has awarded the Constance Meldrum Award for Vision Leadership to Hywel Cheri Jones and Alan Smith, founding Director of ACA. They have been rewarded for their outstanding and tireless commitment to internationalising higher education.

Alan Smith started his career working for the German Rectors Conference and the European Institute of Education and Social Policy. Since then, he has been always dealing with European cooperation in education. From 1978 to 1987, he has been the Operations manager of the European Commission’s ‘Joint Study Programmes’ scheme for higher education cooperation, contributing to the development of ‘Erasmus’. He was the Director of the Erasmus Bureau during its first five years (1987–1992), an external provider that helped with running of the first Erasmus project. He was then Education Director at the European Cultural Foundation and founding Director of ACA. He completed his career with various positions at the European Commission, developing the adult learning programme ‘Grundtvig’. Alan has also been Secretary-General of various European associations, and has received honorary doctorates from Belgian and British universities, as well as life-membership of the European Prison Education Association. He has published widely on European and international cooperation in education.
