A second German university in Egypt

In early February, Egypt’s Minister in charge of higher education, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar and Germany’s Minister for economic affairs, Peter Altmeier, laid the foundation stone for the future German International University (GIU) in Egypt. In comparison to its older brother, the German University Cairo (GUC), the new foundation will focus on internationalisation and on applied sciences. Cooperation with industry and applied research will be one of the key characteristics of the new institution, based on the German Fachhochschul model. Subject areas covered will be mainly engineering and business studies.

The owners of the new university are, on the German side, a consortium of German universities of applied science (Fachhochschulen), including two universities of applied sciences from Berlin and one from Ulm, as well the seven Fachhochschulen belonging to the consortium UAS7. The Egyptian owner is GUC. GUC is a legal personality according to Egyptian law, even though it is de facto a bi-national structure, like its younger brother.
