The latest publication from the UK Higher Education International and Europe Unit, a London-based organisation, offers novel ideas for UK higher education institutions facing increased competition in the trans-national education market.  And while this report concentrates on UK higher education institutions and their overseas university partnerships, it can nevertheless be used as a practical guide for other higher education systems, as it serves to highlight key challenges of

• quality assurance in teaching and research (e.g. evaluation of quality and impact of research);
• internationalisation (e.g. visa issues for students and staff);
• teaching and research collaboration with home institutions (e.g. origins of  funding,  knowledge exchange and transfer, etc.) and
• legal matters regarding overseas partnerships (e.g. intellectual property rights issues).
