A Dutch Micro-credentials pilot

Since October 2021, 32 Dutch higher education institutions – 10 universities and 22 universities of applied sciences – have been taking part in a national Micro-credentials pilot. It is led by the Flexible Education Zone, the Universities of the Netherlands and the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences.

Micro-credentials – certificates of brief learning experiences – are becoming increasingly important in higher education. However, due to the growing range of options, they are difficult to assess in admission procedures. Nuffic's new Micro-Evaluator tool simplifies this assessment. It is easily and freely accessible not only for admission officers and credential evaluators, but also for anyone interested in the recognition of micro-credentials.

The online platform offers standards for the recognition of micro-credentials for admission or exemptions purposes. It determines to what degree the learning experience fits within the Lisbon Recognition Convention. The methodology employed was already available from earlier projects and was developed with funding from the European Commission (Erasmus+) in the STACQ project.
