On 18 September 1988, some 400 rectors from universities worldwide signed the Magna Charta Universitatum. This document has since become the reference for the fundamental values and principles of the university, in particular for institutional autonomy and academic freedom. By now, some 600 universities have signed the Magna Charta Universitatum.
The Observatory of the Magna Charta was jointly created by the European University Association and the University of Bologna to protect, promote and monitor these fundamental principles and values. The Observatory is organising a conference to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Magna Charta Universitatum. The conference will take place in Bologna on 18-20 September 2008.
