The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) is now accepting applications from scholars, researchers, and public intellectuals who face threats to their work, safety, or academic freedom. These fellowships offer placement at universities or higher education institutions globally, enabling recipients to continue research and teaching in secure environments.
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent), have a record of scholarly output, and be under direct or imminent risk in their home country. The programme excludes students, early-stage doctoral candidates, and those already permanently resettled in safe regions.
Fellowships provide up to USD 25,000 for one year, with the option for renewal into a second year. In addition to financial support, recipients receive relocation assistance, health insurance, professional development, and logistical aid. Host institutions are encouraged to contribute offerings such as salary or housing.
Since its foundation in 2002, IIE-SRF has supported more than 1,100 scholars from over 60 countries, partnering with hundreds of institutions worldwide. The programme safeguards academic continuity, enabling threatened voices to continue contributing to global scholarship.
Given the high demand and limited slots, interested individuals should carefully consult the eligibility criteria and application guidelines. All applications are handled confidentially.
