Scholars at Risk (SAR), an international network of institutions and individuals whose mission it is to protect scholars and promote academic freedom, have opened their 13th section in Flanders on 10 December 2021. The section is led by The Flemish Interuniversity Council, (VLIR), bringing together the Dutch-speaking universities of Flanders (Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), KU Leuven, Gent University, University of Antwerp and Hasselt University) and the Brussels Capital Region to collaborate on global and local challenges and the internationalisation of higher education and research in Flanders.
By arranging temporary research and teaching positions at member universities and colleges, SAR protects scholars suffering grave threats to their lives, liberty and well-being, so they can keep working and contributing until conditions improve and they are able to return to their home countries.
SAR also provides advisory services for scholars and hosts, campaigns for scholars who are imprisoned or silenced in their home countries, monitoring of attacks on higher education communities worldwide, and leadership in deploying new tools and strategies for promoting academic freedom and improving respect for university values everywhere.
As part of our CARe project, ACA has conducted its second online talk on possibilities for at-risk scholars in Flanders and there is a dedicated country guide with resources available for this target group.
