Collaboration, Communities and Competition – International Perspectives from the Academy

Dent S., Lane L., Strike T., Collaboration, Communities and Competition - International Perspectives from the Academy. Sense Publishers 2017, ISBN: 9463511202, Pages: 246

This book examines challenges for higher education providers in an increasingly competitive and globalised environment.  Its authors highlight how academia is both a competitive and a collaborative endeavour, and how a tendency towards assuming competitive rather than co-operative behaviour of national systems is reflected in legal or governance frameworks.

The question of competition, collaboration and community is addressed at three levels of analysis:

  • The macro-level or the international system level, includes competition and collaboration between countries and between institutions.
  • The meso-level, includes competition and collaboration between academics and students, and at inter- and intra-disciplinary levels across organisational boundaries.
  • The micro-level considers the interface between individual academics, and between academics and students as learners.

The authors also explore whether there is an alternative approach to a transnational competitive logic.
