This report analyses the development and implementation of quality assurance processes (both internal and external) for doctoral education in European universities. The increasing number of doctorate holders and the growing importance given to the training of researchers, call for accountability and quality enhancement of doctoral education. Besides describing developments, this publication draws recommendations and underlines the differences between quality assurance at doctorate level and quality assurance for the other two cycles (bachelor and master).
