This report presents the results of the 2012 survey of online learning in the United States, which included more than 2 800 responses from academic leaders. The results of this survey indicate that in the fall 2011 term, more than 6.7 million students were taking at least one online course, representing an increase of  570 000 students over the previous year. In addition, students who are taking at least one online course in 2011 amounted to 32% of the total of higher education students. The proportion of higher education institutions offering Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) in 2012 was 2.6%, but another 9.4% of the institutions reported that MOOCs were on the planning stage.
