The International Association of Universities (IAU) has just published the 2009 edition of the World Higher Education Database (WHED), a comprehensive tool providing information on higher education systems throughout the world. The WHED, which underwent a revamp in 2008, is published on an annual basis, the next edition being expected in January 2010. The current edition contains information on:

• the education system and credentials of 183 countries;
• admission criteria for national and overseas students;
• quality assurance and recognition systems;
• contact details for national bodies; and
• location and description, type of institution, officers, academic divisions, degrees, student services, etc., for some 14 000 HEIs offering at least a post-graduate degree or a four year professional diploma.

The WHED is available on CD-Rom and can be ordered from the publishers’ website.
