The International Handbook of Universities is a guide to university-level education worldwide, providing extensive information on higher education institutions that offer at least a graduate degree or a four-year professional diploma. The 2009 edition contains detailed data on more than 12 000 higher education institutions. It includes an index of fields of study, a brief description of the higher education systems in 183 countries, and a list of regional and international higher education organisations.

As an element of novelty, the two volume print directory has a single user license for the online access to the data. As in the case of previous editions, the International Association of Universities (IAU)/ UNESCO Information Centre on Higher Education has collated the data provided by official sources in each country.
