Reforming University Governance. Changing Conditions for Research in Four European Countries. Kehm, Barbara M. & Lanzendorf, Ute (eds.), International Centre for Higher Education Research Kassel (INCHER-Kassel). Bonn: Lemmens, 2006. ISBN 978-3-932306-81-5. Pages: 212.
This book addresses
university governance reforms across Europe since the 1980s. The focus falls on objectives and achievements of reform in
England and the Netherlands (the ‘forerunners’ in reforming university management), and
Austria and Germany (the ‘latecomers’). Case studies are followed by a) a comprehensive comparison of their results and b) possible implications of these results for research.
Reforming University Governance is the first outcome of the German Research Foundation-funded
project ‘Comparing management and self-governance models of universities – An international comparison of university decision-making processes and their consequences for research in practice’. This project is jointly conducted by
German and Dutch researchers.
