On 18 March 2019, Paula Lehtomäki assumed the post of Secretary-General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, replacing Dagfinn Høybråten. Ms. Lehtomäki, a Finnish national, was appointed to the position in September last year when she was still working as State Secretary to Prime Minister Juha Sipilä in Finland. Paula Lehtomäki has previously served as Minister for Foreign Trade and Development in 2003–2007 and as Minister of the Environment in 2007–2011.
Ms. Lehtomäki is the first woman and the youngest person ever to become Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers. She is committed to increasing the visibility of Nordic values and experiences on a global scale while, at the same time, focusing on issues relevant to the people of the Region. Among the Council of Ministers’ political priorities in 2019, she highlighted “digitalisation, mobility and international profiling”.
