Currently, more than 55 countries are engaged in the programme from four different continents.  
Tracking the progress of the programme in the last 4 years several thousands of students have applied for study programmes in Hungary each year, and the number of Stipendium Hungaricum applicants is continuously increasing. In 2017, the number of applicants reached 15 000, and approximately 3 500 students have been selected to begin their studies in Hungary in the next academic year. Among the most popular study programmes this year are Computer Science, International Relations, Electrical Engineering, General Medicine, International Economy and Business, and Mechanical Engineering. The University of Debrecen and Budapest University of Technology and Economics are among the top receiving institutions in this round. Corvinus University of Budapest, University of Pécs, Eötvös Loránd University, and University of Szeged follow further down the line. Looking all over the world at where the majority of stipend applicants come from, – Pakistan, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Syria, Ghana, Iraq and Algeria are the top countries of origin. Students from India, Brazil and Indonesia have also shown notable interest in the programme. 

The programme is based on bilateral educational cooperation agreements signed between the Ministries responsible for education in the sending countries/territories and Hungary, or between higher education institutions.
