The German-Russian Institute of Advanced Technologies (GRIAT) in Kasan, Russia, has officially started its work in September by offering four engineering studying programmes. The new German-Russian University is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) through the 'Transnational Education Programme' (funded by the German Ministry for Education and research) as well as by the Republic of Tartastan. The objective of the university is to set-up engineering studies according to German standards. Partners on Russian side are the Kazan Public Technical Research University; on German side the Technical University Ilmenau and the Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg. 

Transnational education receives increased attention in the internationalization strategies of German universities. German offers abroad reach from single studying programmes to full binational universities. These allow students abroad to receive a university degree according to German standards without having to leave their own country. Today, there are more than 20 000 students enrolled in German transnational studying programmes. The DAAD will hold an event in early December 2014 in Brussels to discuss transnational education as a new form of internationalization (more information shortly here).
