New education ministers in Finland and France

Following parliamentary elections in April 2011, Finland established a new coalition government and cabinet. On 22 June, Jukka Gustafsson was appointed as the Finnish Minister of Education and Science. As the former vice-chair of the Finnish Social Democratic parliamentary group, Mr. Gustafsson will oversee the government’s education and science policies.

Seven days later, Laurent Wauquiez assumed the post as the new French Minister of Higher Education and Research in a government reshuffle following the ministerial departure of Christine Lagarde, who now heads the International Monetary Fund (IMF). From November 2010, Mr. Wauquiez served as Minister of European Affairs. In an interview with EducPros.fr, Mr. Wauquiez outlined his plans to further promote the education policies started by his predecessor, Valerie Pécresse, such as the reform of the licence, which was adopted on 12 July (see France: Reform of the licence in our current edition).
