On 16 January in Luxembourg, ministers and rectors from those countries with just one single university met for an informal exchange on their place within the ever globalising higher education sector.

Representatives from Iceland, Malta, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, Cyprus and Andorra focused discussions on how to ensure an autonomous institution whilst guaranteeing that their programmes respond to economic and social objectives. Also with many of the countries present having linguistic cleavages, the benefits of multilingualism were discussed with each country assessing the opportunities for multilingualism within their institutions. Understandably, financial matters were also high up on the agenda, with the members present all working towards a situation where each university can offer high quality education and create excellence in research. The feedback on the conference was positive, since many questions which ‘one university countries’ faced had not been previously addressed.
