EUA elects new president

On 11 April 2019, the European University Association (EUA) held its General Assembly at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Elections figured high on the agenda, particularly the one for the position of the EUA President. The Assembly elected the Irish pharmacologist Michael Murphy as the organisation’s new President. Murphy’s earlier positions include those of the President of University College Cork and the Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Ireland, as well as the Chair of the Irish Universities Association.  He also researched and taught at the University of Chicago in the US. Murphy has been serving already since 2017 on the EUA Board.

Michael Murphy succeeds Rolf Tarrach, who headed EUA as President in the past four years and who overall served the organisation on its Board and Council for the past ten years. Tarrach, the former President of the University of Luxembourg, was also ACA’s President in the years from 2009 to 2011.

Michael Murphy had competed over the presidency with Martine Rahier, the former Rector of the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Since 2015, she had already been a Vice-President of EUA. Martine Rahier was re-elected to the Board of EUA.

We congratulate and we are sure that the new EUA leadership will bring the organisation success and luck!
