The European commission has released a communication to the European parliament, the council, the European economic and social committee and the committee of the regions, that sets out its vision for improving and modernising education. The communication highlights the strategic importance of education for Europe’s societies and economies and accounts for progress of education and training towards key Europe 2020 targets.
Europe is moving closer to the headline target of 40% of young people completing higher education, but mixed results in graduate employability and equitable access to quality education mark the work cut out for years ahead.
For higher education the ‘Communication on improving and modernising education’ addresses key issues and initiatives that include:
- Addressing the mismatch between skills higher education institutions deliver and those skills graduates require in the job market.
- Increasing the quality of teaching will be a key measure to improve the quality of higher education. Greater investments in pedagogical training of staff, that responds to new challenges of increasingly diversified classroom environments, and raising recognition and rewards for high quality teaching mark the way forward.
- To support cooperation for effective programmes and evidence based policy, in line with the ‘Communication on improving and modernising education’
