In mid-April Madlen Serban was appointed the new director of the European Training Foundation (ETF), the EU agency based in Turin, Italy, which supports education and training in countries surrounding the EU. Following a public recruitment procedure, the ETF's Governing Board chose Ms. Serban from a shortlist of three candidates, put forward by the European Commission. Her appointment was subsequently confirmed by the European Parliament.

Madlen Serban has spent most her career working in the field of vocational education and training, and is currently the director of the National Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Romania. She has worked as an expert and evaluator for international organisations such as the European Commission, UNESCO and the ETF. Ms. Serban holds a PhD degree in Social Partnership in Education and Training from the University of Bucharest.
