The decline of students in universities is a widespread phenomenon in Germany and it affects universities located in Eastern-German regions as well as in Western regions outside the urban centres. These findings are included in a study by the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration (SVR). The study also points to the fact that universities have a strong potential for driving the economic and social development of their regions. Attracting international young talents is, as such, a sustainable way to develop this potential.
With the GATE-Germany programme, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) helps its member universities to attract highly-skilled international young academics. Further cooperation involving political representatives and business stakeholders is envisaged in order to tackle the skills shortage.
