Internationalisation of higher education was high on the agenda of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in November. Together with the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, DAAD deemed Bauhaus University in Weimar, Thuringia, as Germany’s “best international university 2011”. This distinction is given annually to the German university found to be most dynamically “international” in practice and which stands as an excellent example for peer institutions. The winner, a small university with a great tradition and an impressive creative profile, receives not only the title but also prize money in the amount of EUR 50 000 in support of its internationalisation strategy and the launch of new projects.
DAAD was kept busy this month with another key event, the annual meeting on internationalisation of higher education institutions in Germany. Under DAAD’s 2012 motto “Society in Change”, a total of 300 experts gathered to discuss new internationalisation strategies and approaches to the use of social media and communication in German higher education institutions. They also assisted with the awarding of the prize for the best services provided to foreign students at German higher education institutions. This year, the jury honoured two such projects, which were developed by student teams in Aachen and Giessen.
