The fifth instalment of the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Global Education Research Reports chronicles two phenomena: mobility for educational purposes and student and staff (i.e. professors, other academic staff, researchers and scholars), and mobility within and beyond the tertiary level (i.e. vocational and secondary levels of education). Further, it offers a glimpse into the scale and capacities of global student mobility.

While the second part of the book focuses on the US as the sole case study, the majority of the book (part I) showcases, analyses and draws conclusions on global mobility trends. It also examines the impact of national mobility policies in the US, as well as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

The book also draws its analyses from data derived from various notable sources such the IIE’s annual Open Doors report, UNESCO Institute for Statistics, OECD’s Education at a Glance and EUROSTUDENT (2008). Moreover, it illustrates factors that influence students’ decisions to either stay at home or study abroad
