Eurostat 2009: focus on creativity and innovation

Eurostat. Europe in figures – Eurostat yearbook 2009. Office for Official Publications of the European Communities, Luxembourg, 2009. ISBN: 9789279116254. Pages: 560.

The emphasis of the current edition of the Eurostat yearbook lies on creativity and innovation – the theme of the European year 2009. The publication not only opens up with a chapter on this topic, but also has focus on statistics, which are relevant to it.

Overall the yearbook presents a comprehensive selection of statistical data on Europe, mostly covering the period 1997-2007 for the EU (as well as some indicators for candidate countries, members of EFTA, Japan and the United States). With just over 500 statistical tables, graphs and maps, the publication treats the following areas: the economy, population, education, health, living conditions and welfare, the labour market, industry and services, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, external trade, transport, the environment, energy, science and technology and Europe’s regions. The Eurostat yearbook may be viewed as an introduction to European statistics, providing guidance to the vast range of data freely available from the Eurostat website.
