DAAD: new leadership elected

On 18 June, the General Assembly of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) elected the organisation’s leadership for the period from 2020 to 2023. There is change, but also continuity.

DAAD’s President from 1 January 2020 onwards will be Professor Joybrato Mukherjee, who has been the organisation’s Vice-President since 2012 and is thus very well-versed in all DAAD matters. This professor for English linguistics has also been the President of the Justus-Liebig Universität in Giessen since 2009. In his position of DAAD President, Joybrato Mukherjee succeeds Professor Margarete Wintermantel, who after two successive mandates did not re-apply anymore. Margarete Wintermantel’s earlier positions included the presidency of Germany’s rectors’ conference (HRK), as well as that of the European University Association (EUA) and of the Universität des Saarlandes.

DAAD’s new Vice-President is Professor Muriel Kim Helbig. This psychologist is the President of the Technical University of Lübeck, who earlier in her career was in charge of international relations at the Bauhaus Universität in Weimar. Muriel Kim Helbig has been a board member of DAAD since 2016. In addition to Joybrato Mukherjee and Muriel Kim Helbig, the DAAD General Assembly also elected 12 further members of its board (Vorstand).
