DAAD: First Centre for German and European Studies to open in Brazil

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will support, together with the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), the establishment of the Centro de Estudos Europeus e Alemães (CDEA) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The cooperation agreement between the three partners was signed on 10 April 2017. The center’s role will be to enable young Brazilians to deepen their knowledge about Germany and Europe.

CDEA will be the first institution in the Southern hemisphere within the DAAD network of Centers of German and European Studies. DAAD will make available up to EUR 250 000 per year for the running of the center, out of funds provided by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

DAAD has been supporting foreign universities in the establishment of Centers for German and European Studies since 1991. In total, it has funded the set up of 21 centers so far. The network is composed of centers in North America, Europe, East Asia, Russia and Israel. At present, DAAD supports 17 centers in 11 countries. Through research and teaching activities, publications, events and joint projects, the centers aim to contribute significantly to an understanding of contemporary Germany in a wider European context within their respective host countries”.
