Italian general elections in April 2008 led to the establishment of a new government under the leadership of  Silvio Berlusconi. The new Minister for Education, University and Research is Mariastella Gelmini. Lawyer by training, the 35-year old Gelmini has already been a member of the Italian Parliament since 2006. She is one of the four female ministers (out of a total of 21) of this government.
