CMEPIUS global research project: “The Academic Profession in the Knowledge-Based Society” (APIKS)

ACA’s member CMEPIUS (Slovenian National Agency for Erasmus+ and other programmes) is a partner in a global research project on the changing nature of academic professions. The project, The Academic Profession in the Knowledge-Based Society (APIKS), involves almost 30 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Mozambique, The Netherlands, New Zeeland, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, Great Britain and United States. Most of the countries involved in APIKS already took part in two similar projects in 1992 and 2007 called the Changing Academic Profession (CAP). CMEPIUS conducted the first extensive CAP/EUROAC study in 2013 on Academic profession and the conditions of academic work in Slovenia.

APIKS builds on the results and experiences of previous research, such as, for instance, a large-scale survey of academic staff employed in higher education focusing on workplace environment, work satisfaction and the changes and attitudes in the academic profession. The surveying phase was concluded by the end of 2018 in most of the participating countries and the collected data are now under revision and further preparation for international comparative analysis. 

The project is coordinated by Timo Aarrevaara (Finland), Leo Goedegebuure (Australia) and Jung Cheol Shin (Korea), with Ulrich Teichler as an advisor. The Slovenian part of the project is carried out by Alenka Flander (CMEPIUS) and experts Manja Klemenčič (Harvard University) and Sebastian Kočar (Australian National University).
